My Muse and Mythology

I’ve been stuck in Ancient Greece for the last few years. Not stuck, that sounds bad… How about vacationing? I’ve been on a fantastic holiday surrounded by gorgeous immortals – happily exploiting their trials, tribulations, and loves. And since I’m really a romance writer, I tend to focus (obsessively) on their love life.

Hence the name: The Loves of Olympus Series. Seriously, it’s the many loves of the various Olympians that have provided me with such endless writing inspiration. I like to add in some actual history, some known mythology, and then shake it all up with a major ‘What if’ for fun.

And what lover of romance, Greek Mythology, and tragedy could pass up writing a tale based on the ultimate tortured hero – Hades? Yes, that’s right – Hades… as a hero? Well, he is! And what a hero!

I know, you’re not convinced. I guess he’d not the most obvious choice for a leading man. He’s this ‘evil’ guy that rules the Underworld. He tortures the dead, putting them in their ‘place’. He has cold, pale skin. He’s heartless, cruel… unfeeling. And he kidnaps an innocent young girl and forces her into an eternity of living half of each year in the Underworld which results in the annual change of the seasons…

But what if there’s more to his story – and what makes him tick?

If you read For the Love of Hades, you’ll learn his story and, hopefully, see my lord Hades as a very different sort of fellow. A hero. A romantic hero. The romantic hero – one that will make your heart speed up and your tummy warm and fuzzy. At least I hope that’s the way you’ll feel – I did when I wrote it, anyway. Here’s hoping he has the same lovely effect on you, too!

Happy Reading and thanks for letting me gush about my latest hero – Hades.

Review

When I started participating in blog tours, Sasha’s tour for Medusa, A Love Story was one of the first I participated in and I absolutely loved it so I jumped at the chance to participate in this tour for Hades.

I have to admit that I kind of liked Hades in Medusa as well, so I already was excited to read more about him when Sasha told me his story was next. Sasha not only delivered a great story but thanks to her I have a full blown crush on a fictional character. As she said in her guest post—What a hero!

Sasha really has a gift etelling the Greek myths in her own unique way from the other side. That was what originally struck me about Medusa’s story– hearing her side of the story. Now after reading Hades’ story, I really would like to think that the way things truely played out for these icons of Greek mythology was just the way Sasha told them. I loved her version of Hades and Persephone’s tale.

But enough gushing…well for now.

I loved Persephone’s character. She is joyful, somewhat innocent, but fearless and passionate. She came alive off the page with her energy and her love for Hades. And she was truely relentless in pursuit of him. At times she had me giggling because she is literally Hades polar opposite.

But as they always say, opposites attract, and oh boy do they in For the Love of Hades.

Back to Hades (resumes gushing). The lord of the Underworld, Hades is this pale, dark-haired, glorious, brooding specimen that keeps to himself in the underworld and does not like to consort with the rest of the gods on Olympus, unless it’s completely necessary. Everyone assumes he is cruel, maybe even a little crazy. But when Persephone happens upon him one day that is not what she sees at all.

Try as he might to prevent it, Persephone gets under his skin and into the heart he pretends isn’t there. Some of my favorite bits of this story are times when she catches him letting his facade slip as she chips away at his false exterior. I laughed when Persephone would catch Hades smiling before he could wipe it from his face and resume his usual stone cold expression, or times when he caught himself  dropping his guard and cursed himself for it. (Made me think of Ozzie Osborne with the bubbles when he is yelling “But I’m the prince of darkness, Sharon!”)

But this tales isn’t simply about Hades and Persephone’s relationship, as with any worth wile love story, there are obstacles set in their way. An arranged marriage gone awry and the ongoing war with the Persians threaten Hades and Persephone’s love along with Hades’ own inability to embrace that he is capable of love and deserving of Persephone’s love.

Sasha truly did a beautiful job with this story and I could go on all day about what I love about it. Her characters, as always, are captivating and the love in this story is genuine, passionate, and beautifully written. I look forward to her next installment in the Loves of Olympus series, but after Hades’ story, him and Persephone hold a special little place in my heart.

Hades, the Lord of the Underworld, has no patience for living things or his Olympian brethren. His purpose is order, administering justice to those who enter his realm, and keeping the balance decreed by the Fates. Meeting Persephone sways his focus, her gentle sweetness threatening his control. But he will not be tempted.

Poseidon’s scheming wreaks havoc upon Persephone. Hades has no choice – he must rescue her.

Hades awakens something within the Goddess Persephone. She feels no fear from his brooding presence. In truth, she’s never felt so alive. Every stolen moment together only confirms her instinct: he is meant to be hers. Such a powerful union suit will face opposition – from Olympus, her troubled betrothed, the Fates, even Hades himself – but she is determined to win his heart.

Hades, God of Death, has no heart. Persephone is determined to prove otherwise…

Loves of Olympus Book One

By Sasha Summers

Book Description:

It’s said love can change a person. Medusa wasn’t always a monster…

Medusa is ruled by duty, to her Titan father and the Goddess Athena. She’s no room for the tenderness her warrior guard, Ariston, stirs. When Olympus frees her from service, her heart leads her into the arms of the guard she loves… and curses her as the creature with serpent locks.

Ariston goes to war with a full heart… and dreadful foreboding. He learns too late of the danger Medusa faces, alone, and a Persian blade sends him into the Underworld. But death, curses, nor the wrath of the Gods will keep him from returning to her.

Poseidon will use Greece’s war to get what he wants: Medusa. He does not care that she belongs to another. He does not care that she will be damned. He is a God, an Olympian, and she will be his.

About the Author

sasha summersSasha Summers is part gypsy. Her passions have always been storytelling, history, and travel. It’s no surprise that her books visit times past, set in places rich with legends and myth. Her first play, ‘Greek Gods and Goddesses’ (original title, right?), was written for her Girl Scout troupe.

She’s been writing ever since. She loves getting lost in the worlds and characters she creates; even if she frequently forgets to run the dishwasher or wash socks when she’s doing so. Luckily, her four brilliant children and hero-inspiring hubby are super understanding and supportive.

Sasha is an active member of RWA and several Texas Chapters. A self-proclaimed movie-addict, she is full of all sorts of useless movie tidbits and trivia.
