Beasty Blog Tour- Beast Within: Review, Excerpt, & Giveaway
It’s with much pleasure and excitement today that I am sharing with you all not only an awesome book but an awesome author that you should definitely keep your eye on. NaNoWriMo is an interesting time of year where you write like a crazy person and meet other like-minded individuals that are also madly scribbling down their first drafts as well. As luck might have it, I met Tyffani Clark Kemp online amidst the NaNo madness & we’ve been writerly buddies since. She even became one of my betas for The Possess Saga as well and in turn, I became one of her betas and got the chance to read Beast Within.
That being said, friends or not, I am still going to give a fair review and if I didn’t think it was a book worth reading, I wouldn’t be hosting a stop and doing a review of it here on my blog. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. But before I get into my review, here is a little bit about it as well as an excerpt. Don’t forget the giveaway at the bottom!

Gabriel Slade runs Hollywood with his gorgeous blue eyes and egregious temper. No one knows that underneath it all is a man with a frozen heart, cursed to become a beast at every full moon. For seven days he has no choice but to roam the earth as a vicious animal, until he meets a woman who can change it all.
Luna Grace has a hatred for everything Gabriel Slade stands for, but she doesn’t even know what he looks like. When a chance encounter reveals feelings Luna never knew she harboured, it stands to reason that she would run.
Can Luna overcome her hatred and break the curse? Or will Gabriel’s temper keep her from realizing her true feelings, dooming him to remain the beast forever?
“This is nice.”
“Yes, it is,” he agreed and felt a little vain.
She unwound the red scarf from her neck. The gray cardigan almost fell from one shoulder where he saw the red straps of a bra and a camisole. A soft scar marred the perfect skin of her collar bone. Without thinking, he crossed to her and traced the scar with a finger. He looked into her eyes. She’d stopped breathing. Gabe traced his finger down to the top button of her cardigan and fondled it until the button popped free. It was nothing for him to be so brazen, but tonight, with her, something about it felt dirty. But he continued. God in heaven, the camisole underneath was the same bright red. When he looked up again her eyes almost glowed.
“Oh, the scar? Um,” she stuttered. He couldn’t help but smirk. “My dad…”
His head snapped up, furious. Her father had done this to her?
“No!” she said in a rush. “We were practicing. It was my fault. I wasn’t paying attention. I can’t remember… I think I was upset about a boy at school or something. I didn’t get my sword up in time. It was an accident.”
Gabe nodded as he ground his back teeth together. Finally, the last button was free. He pushed the cardigan from her shoulders, brushing her arms with his fingers as he did. Her skin reacted to his touch and she shivered.
“Do you think it would be okay if…” She motioned to the bathroom.
He shrugged when he wanted to laugh. “Why not? It’s just a toilet.” The red popped against her olive skin and all Gabe wanted to do was see more of her. When was the last time he’d lost control of his lust?
She took her drink with her and closed the door. Finally the moment of truth. Gabe slipped out of his suit jacket and unbuttoned his shirt. He rolled the sleeves up out of comfort and habit and tossed back his drink. The glass he set on the dresser, and walked out onto the balcony for some fresh air, hoping it would calm him down.
Hurry up, little one.
If you’ve seen some of my other reviews, you might have noticed I enjoy a good retelling of old tales in a new light. For that reason, Beast Within intrigued me. Ms. Kemp took the story of “Beauty and the Beast” and made it her own with a modern, sexy, and imaginative twist. There aren’t any dancing dishes or singing candelabras in this version and it’s certainly not “Disney-friendly” but there are still many nods to the original tale that will keep you smiling when you find them.
Gabriel Slade is a gorgeous, brooding (I’m pretty sure I’ve mentioned how much I enjoy brooding men) Hollywood hotshot who is cursed to turn into the Beast every full moon until his curse is broken by love. Luna is one tough chick that knows her way around a sword better than anyone else and as a result she ends up doing choreography for many fight scenes in movies. Oh, she also hates Gabriel Slade, due to some long held grudges. She never has met him, but can’t stand to even hear his name.
After being dragged to one of his big parties, she happens to catch his eye, and he approaches her, all the while concealing who he actually is. Sneaky little beasty that he is. Right away he realizes that Luna may be the one to break the curse, but the two of them are going to have to get past their own issues in order for that to happen. As you can imagine, that doesn’t come easy. All the while lurking in the dark, there are others intent on stopping Gabe from breaking his curse and dooming him to live as the beast forever.
I loved Gabe and Luna together both when they were butting heads and when they…weren’t butting heads *smirks* Ms. Kemp managed to stir up some real and explosive chemistry between these two that gave their already dimensional characters even more depth and genuine feel. The supporting cast is great as well. From Michael to Elmo, and Devonshire and many others.
Don’t even get me started on how much I love the butler, Devonshire! (DEVONSHIRE!)
If you liked Beauty and the Beast when you were younger and want to read a more “grown-up” version with some serious twists and turns then you should DEFINITELY pick up a copy of Beast Within.
Or have Devonshire fetch you a copy
